HO CHI MINH CITY (Saigon) and VICINITY :

Ho Chi Minh City: Area 2.029 sq.km; estimated population 7,500,000; average temperature 27 – 30 c (80 F).  Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city of Vietnam with French colonial and international-style buildings.  Under the constant bustling and dynamic atmosphere,  is the commercial, industrial and international communication center where the economic changes are sweeping the nation.  Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon before 1975, is actually a large harbor and now the most modern city in the country providing local and modern goods and services.   You’ll be surprised that you will find electronic and cosmetic name brands found in Ho Chi Minh City to be cheaper then Europe and North America.  It’s mostly due to the lower import tax.   Some places of interest: The Nha Rong Wharf or Ho Chi Minh Museum where in 1911 where Ho Chi Minh himself left to return and liberated Vietnam. The Reunification Hall or President Palace of the former Southern government is an intricate complex with helicopter pad and underground war room ( 2.5 hour visit); history museum, Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, War-remnants Museum, Lacquer factory, Cho Lon (the China town), Thien Hau pagoda.

Tay Ninh: ( 2.5 hours drive from HCMC) The Cao Dai Temple, the sect’s Holy See is one of the most striking structures found no where else in all of Asia.  Located 90 km Northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh is best known for its fancy temple of Caodaism - a product of an attempt to create a ideal religion through the fusion of secular and religion philosophies of the East and West.  There is a 12 Noon ceremony everyday, where the priests dress in colorful costumes to chant their daily prayers.  This ceremony lasts for about an hour and a half.

Cu Chi Tunnels: Have you ever seen two opposing military bases built in the same place - one is underground, the other is above ground?  Then drive 35 km Northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, you can see the complicated underground fighting tunnels, which extends 250 km in length weaving under villages.  One of the biggest U.S military bases was built in this area - The Dong Nai Base or the 25th Infantry Division – was built right on top of the tunnels.  Cu Chi is not only an underground military base, but an underground complex which included meeting halls, kitchens, food storage, medical operating rooms, trapdoors, weapon factories, and even entertainment room.  Crawl through the tunnels for just about 100 meters.  Here tourists can try their hand at shooting an AK47 (Russian machine gun) or an M16 (U.S  made) for a 1$ a bullet.  There is also short movie footage about the intricate tunnel after the tour.  It is about 1.5 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City.
